Energy efficient light bulbs continue to make their way into the mainstream market. One of the most recent examples is the Pali Momi Medical Center in Hawaii. This facility has replaced about 2300 fluorescents and compact fluorescents with LED technology, reducing their electric bill by over 50%!
While LED light bulbs come with an initial cost much higher than CFLs, their lifetime comprises for this. LEDs will last so long as 100,000 hours, when compared with compact fluorescents which can last from 10,000 to 15,000 hours. The higher initial cost is usually paid back inside the novice of usage, with each consecutive year being pure savings. A spokesperson for that Pali Momi Medical Center expects their investment in LEDs to be paid back by savings in around 15 months, with all the savings continuing for many years.
Impressive savings have been seen in the Honolulu airport, in which a massive retrofit of parking garage lighting is saving $100,000 30 days on electricity. If they conducted similar retrofits in other airport facilities, the savings can be incredible. LED bulbs not just save the big bucks over time, but they are better for your environment than compact fluorescents. CFLs contain mercury and emit UV rays, while LEDs contain no toxic chemicals and don't emit UV rays.
